simulation and tuning
Tuning of the horn determines the sound.
Tuning means choosing dimensions and shape of the horn path. Using extensive simulation in the design process makes it possible to adjust tuning to match a desired sound character, and predict with great accuracy how the horn will sound and perform.
In more technical terms, the horn dimensions determine usable frequency range, frequency response, output capacity and time impulse response.
Simulation also reveals any side-effects of the horn loading, such as resonances or ringing. To eliminate these faults has huge impact on sound quality, and the Compact Horn technology with damping channels and simulation-based approach makes it possible to achieve smooth response.
Horns do definitely not sound the same. Choice of tuning and the design process in use has huge impact on the end result, much more than in a typical sealed or ported box.
They are difficult to design, but also very rewarding when you get it right.
