Demo and sound evaluation playlists

Music for sound evaluation

A set of playlists for demo and sound evaluation purposes, where each list is dedicated to focus on one or a limited set of sound properties.

Each property will get an individual playlist, with one or more tracks to choose from, which are meant to show off how good or bad the sound system performs for that exact property.

We can also swap out tracks when we eventually end up playing them so many times, we can no longer bear to listen to it anymore.

Here are the property categories:

Dynamics:

Ability to create sense of power and realism. Transients with realism and impact.

Bass:

Definition, impact.

Sub-bass:

Below 20Hz, some rare pieces of music has it.

3D:

Rendering of instruments and space from the recording with placement, body of projected images, space around images. Depth, width of soundstage.

Vocal:

Tonality, rendering such that the singer appears as a contained body with space around, s - sounds.

Advanced property categories:

Texture:

Rendering of surfaces and materials. In some recordings, true magic happens.

Separation:

How well separated are the individual instruments. Is it easy to focus on one single instrument playing along with others.

Dynamics:

Flashbulb, Autumn Insomnia Session, from album Kirlian Selections.

Vocal:

Lizz Wright, Barley. Bonus bass evaluation; nice, heavy, dry punch.

Texture:

Yosi Horikawa, Letter. Definitely writing on paper. But how real is it, can you see the pencil and the paper?
