Developing the F4

The F4 is a new loudspeaker based on F205 technology.

It has the same slim shape, only taller, with additional 2x low frequency drivers on top of the HF section.

This gives a huge improvement in vertical directivity control, and simulations show that in-room frequency response will now be very flat, when floor and ceiling early reflections are virtually eliminated.

The doubling of capacity at mid-lower frequencies also gives reduced distortion and much higher spl capacity - for those who like to play LOUD, even in larger rooms.

The F4 may be the first speaker on the market with controlled directivity both in horizontal and vertical planes.

Here is an early rendering:

F4 vs F205:

F4 is larger - footprint same, but it is much taller and thus will have larger visual impact.

F4 will be more expensive, yet still reasonable compared to other top-end loudspeakers.

So, what does this gain in benefits, related to sound and practical use:

  • More capacity, may be noticed in larger rooms with longer listening distance at very loud levels.
  • Lower distortion in upper bass-low midrange.
  • Frequency response measures more smooth and flat at listening position.
  • Even less interaction from close boundaries means easier to place.
  • Even better presence and realism of projected images.
  • Better suited for studio environment due to higher and symmetrical vertical sound radiation.

The F4 will get a square-shaped foundation, with all 4 corners adjustable in height.

Looks like the F4 project will be suspended, at least for now. The F205 already achieves the goal of a small speaker with a dynamic and large sound, and the F4 is simply not enough difference.

Going forward, it seems larger, full-size horn systems is the way.
